Well, John caught me by surprise. He decided that we would do something special for our copper anniversary. We had been island hopping the Dutch Caribbean. He got some help from a few local friends he had made. They worked out a scheme that resulted in the most magical night of our holiday.

I discovered a note in our apartment. It was in his handwriting: “Be ready 4 2nite @ 18:30 & dress the part XOXO”.  I got ready and like clockwork, a driver was at my door at the appointed time.

The driver took me to a secluded beach. And there, was my Jonathan, standing on the shore with the red sunlit sky and turquoise sea to his back. This beautiful backdrop was our vista for a 4 course, candle lit dinner on the sand  – our background music was the sounds of the waves softly splashing on the shore. Our dinner table was a blanket on the sand, and the lighting was courtesy of a small bonfire.

The golden sun slowly sank below the horizon into the Caribbean sea. Stars claimed their place in the heavens until the Milky Way was fully on display. This dance of lights and sounds took my breath away.

And that was just the start of an unforgettable night. We waltzed down 12 and a half years of memories and tried to envision our future. We spoke softly so as to avoid overwhelming the rhythm of the sea. Time stood still as we lay in each other’s arms under the stars.

I wanted him to kiss me like he did when we fell in love. He did.

I wanted to lay in his arms under the stars. I did.

I wanted us to enjoy each other’s warmth until the sun we saw at sunset lit up the sky again at dawn. And we did.

Island hopping is worth it for the marine life alone! The Caribbean is known for great food. Particularly it’s amazing sea food. But seeing these amazing creatures in their amazing environment is an amazing experience.

The incidental and unexpected encounters are perhaps the best. I understand that it does not happen very often, but my wife and I had some unexpected visitors one Sunday afternoon at a beach picnic on Statia. I was in the sea when I saw something darting over the water. Perhaps I was mistaken. It could have just been s few silvery waves as they were nearing us on the shore. But looking more closely, we noticed that those were not waves. Rather, a school of flying fishes were making their way though the sea near our part of the beach! It was really unexpected and quite a sight. Their trek by our section of the strand lasted about 10 minutes. But that was a very, VERY cool 10 minutes!
